Pike Place Market, one of the nation’s largest and oldest public markets, is a popular hot spot for Seattle tourists and locals. For over a century, farmers, craftsmen, and vendors of all kinds have come to Pike Place to offer an array of produce, baked treats, flowers, and handmade gifts and jewelry, creating an exciting atmosphere. Just blocks away from the waterfront, the market offers an entire 9 acres of options for food and entertainment. Providing a fun, colorful ambiance, Pike Place is the perfect date destination if you want to sample the food, art, and culture that the city has to offer. The market is especially fun when the sun comes out, although it can get a little crowded on a sunny weekend. Be sure to go on a warm day to avoid getting caught outside in the rain.
WHAT TO DO:
Stroll along Western Ave. where you will find street musicians and artists galore, as well as vendors offering handmade jewelry, artwork and gift items. Inside the market, rows and rows of flower vendors create a treat for the eyes, as well as a romantic vibe. Tulip season is in full swing, and you will find no shortage of these bright blooms, sold by single stems or by the dozen. Be sure to hit the fish market, but watch out! Each time a fish is purchased, it is tossed over the counter to be weighed and packaged.
WHERE TO EAT:
A more laid back option for either lunch or dinner is Place Pigalle ($$ - www.placepigalle-seattle.com). This cozy restaurant features a seasonal menu, as well as a breathtaking view of the Puget Sound and the Pacific Mountains. For cheaper options, grab some artisan bread and cheese at one of the many market vendors, or stroll down Pike Place where you will find a number of bakeries, markets, and bistros. There are plenty of inexpensive, but delicious food options for those who want to stick to budget. One of our favorites is Beechers Handmade Cheese, offering a tasty twist on Macaroni and Cheese, as well as Paninis featuring their Flagship cheese, which is made right on the spot. For an authentic Seattle espresso, stop by the very first Starbucks, still featuring the original logo.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Ladies
Since the market is so much more fun on a sunny day, leave the rain jacket at home and enjoy the colors and beauty of spring. The season is all about floral prints, so pair a bright flowery top with a comfortable pair of jeans for walking around. Bring along a lightweight spring blazer and even a scarf, in case there is a breeze. For walking around on the worn cobblestone streets, go for a cute pair of peep toe flats for comfort, and don’t be afraid to go for color!
Men
For a classic Seattle look, pair a plaid button-down with a cardigan for warmth, or to go dressier, a classic sport coat like this one. Go for a retro-inspired chambray tie and a straw fedora for a classic appeal, as well as some vintage inspired shades to complete the look. The same rule goes for you too: it’s springtime; so don’t shy away from brighter colors.
